Outdoor activities abound in the town and in adjacent Rocky Mountain National Park, so come prepared to hike, to watch wildlife (don't be surprised to find an elk grazing outside your motel room), and indulge in mountain biking, fishing, golfing, four-wheeling or just sitting on a rock and basking in the high-altitude sun (while wearing sunscreen, of course).
You'll probably spend most of your visit in the park, taking time to drive up Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuously paved road in America, over the continental divide, then back down into Grand Lake on the other side.

The park is heavily visited. And from the day it opens (usually around Memorial Day or whenever the snow plows can get through) to the first snowfall in autumn, which can be as early as September, Trail Ridge Road is busy. Less traveled (after the first two miles, it's gravel and one-way - up!) is Old Fall River Road, which will get you off the beaten path a bit (and no RVs are allowed to slow things down). Popular hikes include Sprague Lake (a trail rims the entire lake, and is fairly easy going) and the Dream Lake Trail, which is longer but easy, and allows views of three lakes. There are lots of places to pull out and gawk at the views of the Neversummer Range and other dramatic peaks in the park.
